I first coached this dynamic duo – Christina and Ash back in 2009 and watched them take the bull by horns and go after their dreams over the years. In 2011, one of their major dreams came true! They are the proud owners of a Lionheart Modern Martial Arts, located in New Jersey. They empower people by teaching them self-confidence through mixed martial arts training
What inspired you to start it?
Ash: A combination of experiencing the positive impact martial arts has first hand, a love of studying, sharing, teaching and helping others – and an Intuitive Life Coaching session with Simone Kelly that said I should leave the corporate job I wasn’t happy in and eventually I’d “turn boys into men” as Simone put it way back when.
Any interesting facts that you can share about your industry?
People already figure that martial arts contributes to physical fitness and learning self-defense skills. What’s less known is how training martial arts positively influences relationships outside of the dojo – at home, work & social situations. Putting yourself out there, dealing with people from all walks of life, solving problems, testing yourself against others -builds self confidence, patience and emotional endurance.
Most popular problem you help people solve?
Often times, people begin with a specific goal in mind, maybe to lose weight or learn self-defense – and they tend to meet their goals just by coming to class. Then as the weeks pass, students experience positive changes that carry over into their overall quality of life. Feeling better, making new friends, being in tune with the body, stress release that improves relationships at home or work, learning to face problems. Then they make new goals – clean diet, training for a competition, adding different disciplines of martial arts to their training. That’s the best part. The evolution of the soul!
Who is Your Favorite Mentor?
Ash: Muhammed Ali – his confidence, energy and work ethic are eternally inspirational.
Cris: There so many! I will have to say my husband Ash and Maya Angelou right now. Ash understands me and supports me! Being a woman, a mother in the world of martial arts, I’m definitely a minority and he believes in my dreams always. Maya Angelou for her poetry which helps me stand up straight when I am having a rough day.
What is a Book You’d Recommend and why?
Ash: A Fighter’s Heart, by Sam Sheridan
Cris: Women Who Run with the Wolves (every women needs this book!) & Andre Galvao’s Drill to win – Its a jiujitsu book with amazing drills to practice, broken down and diagramed.
How do you stay motivated?
The students make it easy. Watching people grow for the better, being a part of the learning process and support system is very rewarding. Plus, it’s loads of FUN
What’s a bold move you took that turned your business around?
We have had students come in here try a class or two and love it. Then they tell us they have no job. lol. We pride ourselves on being in this business for the betterment of people – so we work with students who need help. Sometimes that means letting them train while they secure a job or bartering services in exchange for training.
We have found that working with people has helped the school to grow, and it always comes back tenfold. Some of our most dedicated students wouldn’t be here if we had been super rigid with our financial policies when they arrived at the door.
If you are in their town, please check them out and show your support. Spread the word about this amazing couple who are training others to OWN THEIR POWER !
